Legal marijuana pushes Colorado broker to new heights

Legalization for marijuana may be on the horizon in Canada, but it’s hazy as to how the new legislation will be implemented – and what the resulting impact on the insurance industry will be.

However, Canadian insurers do have a precedent to look to in Colorado, which legalized the drug in 2013. Local insurance professional Julius Birch “J.B.” Woods, owner of Parker, Colo.-based Greenpoint Insurance – one of the only cannabis-focused independent insurance agencies in the country – says he can barely keep up with demand. He can already report a premium volume of 140% over last year.

Watch: Marijuana companies have budding aspirations for pot legalization in Canada

Vancouver Island’s Tilray is one of 30 companies that can legally produce medical marijuana in Canada.

It’s been quietly producing pot in Nanaimo for two years, with scientists and horticulturalists working side-by-side in a 60,000 square-foot facility that somewhat resembles a maximum security prison.

But behind the concrete and fencing, is a company that was named a top employer in the city in 2014 — bringing an $46-million economic windfall to the city.

“The market is continuing to grow at a rapid pace and we can see a lot of opportunities in the medical marijuana space,” Tilray CEO Greg Engel told Global News.

Alaska marijuana regulators mull rules for pot use at licensed stores

Alaska marijuana regulators are meeting to consider draft rules for allowing use of marijuana in some businesses that will sell pot.

Under the plan, Alaska would become the first state in the nation to allow customers to consume marijuana products at authorized retail stores.

The first marijuana businesses aren't expected to be licensed until September — near the end of cruise ship season and a bit too late to cash in on tourism this year.

The regulations are expected to be discussed near the end of Wednesday's meeting of the Marijuana Control Board in Anchorage. Any recommendations would be subject to public comment.

No licenses have been issued yet for retail marijuana shops.

Entrepreneurs Find Gold in Legal Marijuana Market

David Umeh's rented SUV yanked to a halt in front of the glass-and-steel facade of CityCenterDC, glitzy home to Gucci and Dior and Hermes and the next customer of the marijuana revolution.

A young woman slid out the passenger side and strode up to a man still dressed in the sharp gray suit of a Washington DC nine-to-fiver waiting outside the centre's tony apartment building. He grinned as she handed him a bottle of apple juice with lemon and mint, for which he had shelled out upwards of $US55 ($A72). "Fresh-pressed," she told him, sticking to the script that Umeh had taught her.

Identity Matters: Will Alaska's Cannabis Entrepreneurs Sell 'Marijuana,' 'Ganja' or 'Pot'?

More than two years ago, Leif Abel sat around a table with his brother and his father and a list of about 50 possible names for the marijuana cultivation business they wanted to start in Kasilof.

After considering whether to take on an image that clearly sends a message about cannabis or perhaps something more discreet, they landed on the name Greatland Ganja and a logo that prominently features a cannabis leaf.

“We’re proud of what we’re doing,” Abel said. “We’re trying to project a culture of openness and acceptance of people within this subculture that is coming into main society.”

Marijuana culture is celebrated plenty of other days besides April 20.
