Tracking Chips Will Follow Oregon Marijuana Products

Tracking pot from seed to sale.

The state of Oregon is starting to train marijuana growers, processors and store on new technology to make sure marijuana stays legally in our borders. This uses the same kind of chip that pets get from the humane society.

It's the software that will put Oregon's pot market on the same level as any corporation-organized inventory, tracked delivery and point of sale records.

It's from a company called Metrc. Colorado uses it as well. Washington uses something similar.

A blue barcode starts in the soil. Inside the tag is a chip with a serial number that is read by an RFID scanner.

Marijuana Compounds Brewed Using Yeast by Canadian Biotech Firms

Yeast fermentation technique allows researchers to isolate cannabinoids for treatment of different diseases.

New medical marijuana products produced by yeast could soon be on the market, the co-founder of a biotech company says. That could potentially lead to a wider range of cannabinoid-based drugs that proponents say could be more effective for treating certain medical conditions than medical marijuana itself.

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in marijuana. Kevin Chen's Montreal-based company,  Hyasynth, has successfully made the cannabinoid  cannabigerol (CBG) from genetically engineered yeast, and he says this could be a precursor to other major and minor  cannabinoids.

"The establishment of an online retail platform complements the company's existing wholesale sales channels and allows MGC Pharmaceuticals to significantly accelerate its direct-to-customer product sales strategy," the company said.

Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive component of cannabis and accounts for more than 50 per cent of known therapeutic applications.

MGC shares gained 0.2 cents, or 6.45 per cent, to 3.3 cents.

Tech exec's grass-roots venture

Keith McCarty had already given his parents plenty of reason to be proud of their only son.

In 2012, a technology company he helped build was bought by Microsoft for $1.2 billion. At 26, the Orange native was sitting pretty.

So later that year, when McCarty met his parents in a local taco shop to tell them about the first tech company he was launching on his own, expectations were high.

McCarty said his company would be called Eaze, and it would be an on-demand health care service that connects medical marijuana patients with deliveries from local dispensaries.

With a couple of taps on a smartphone, he explained, patients could order buds or edibles for discreet delivery in 20 minutes or less – much like calling for a ride from Uber.

How Meadow Is Building a Company (and Community) Around Cannabis

Meadow, which has been described in the press as the “Uber for cannabis,” connects consumers with doctors that provide medical marijuana prescriptions over video chat, and then connects them to a local dispensary that provides home delivery.

On the heels of the news that Meadow has raised $2.1 million in new funding to build out specialized enterprise software, The Macro’s Steven Chan talked to Meadow’s co-founders Harrison Lee, Scott Garman, David Hua, and Rick Harrison about building a company in a highly regulated (and often stigmatized) space, creating community, navigating political hurdles, and more.

Social media is a blessing for small business entrepreneurs to spread the word about their business without spending a huge amount of advertising dollars. Nevertheless, a majority of small businesses are not able to capitalize on this opportunity.
