The cannabis industry in Canada is bound to open up a whole new market once recreational cannabis becomes legal, and a new industry means new job openings.
The Canadian cannabis industry has already employed hundreds and thousands of people since medical cannabis became legal.
This year, the federal government legalized recreational cannabis for personal use, and backed up the industry behind it.
The market for recreational cannabis is supposed to be several times larger than the medical, but only once it catches wind and people get used to it.
The new industry is valued at $23 billion including growers, online and brick-and-mortar retailers, transportation, security, taxes and the highly expected cannabis tourists.
Where in Canada are these jobs located?
The sheer size of this market means that there will be many more jobs than in the medical part of the industry, and people are yet to start applying.
Many American companies are also coming to Canada so they will also offer spots in their offices and facilities.
Once it legalized recreational marijuana, the federal government also undertook the obligation to supply all the provinces with regulated cannabis, so almost every province will be supplied by the crown corporation or similar organization.
British Columbia has already went a long way in organizing it’s recreational cannabis system and are currently looking for employees who are willing to work as a part of it.
There are many different jobs, ranging from entry level opportunities such as age gaters and warehouse personnel, to higher level ones like growth process engineers.
Many online job boards (for example Indeed) offer cannabis jobs across the whole country, and people are loving it.
Changing a job is often difficult, let alone changing the entire industry you’re working in, but for many young adults this is an opportunity to work for something they truly believe in.
For those that are interested in further expanding their knowledge for growing cannabis and establishing a business related to it there are now schools that offer classes.
Bigger than you might have thought
Some estimates say that the recreational cannabis industry will bring in around 150,000 new jobs to Canada.
Several months ago, Canada had the lowest rate of unemployment in 40 years.
Later it climber to about 6%, where it remained until now, according to the latest findings.
In the last few months, employment significantly increased in Ontario (+35,000), Saskatchewan (+8,300), and Manitoba (+4,100) while other provinces didn’t make that big of a mark.
The influx of new jobs could also help Canada lower its unemployment rate. The previous record low was 5.8%.
Many licensed producers are in the process of expanding their production capacity, so naturally they will also look for temporary workers to help with construction, as well permanent employees for those facilities.
This increase in production has been the result of many companies signing supply deals with provinces, as well as foreign companies and countries which made the demand rise significantly.
Canadian licensed producers will hopefully manage to produce enough cannabis to cover both the medical and recreational market in order to prevent a shortage.
