America’s DEA Proposes a Massive Increase in Government Marijuana Production to Meet Research Demands

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has proposed a  massive increase in the amount of marijuana it will allow to be produced this year. The DEA’s objective is to meet the demands of researchers studying medicinal uses of marijuana.

The Controlled Substances Act, a law which categorizes drugs in accordance with their risk of abuse and medical benefit, provides for the DEA to control the growing and production of Schedule I and II drugs for research purposes. Cocaine and marijuana are both Schedule I drugs.

In September 2014, the DEA published its Established Aggregate Production Quotas (APQ) for Schedule I and II Controlled Substances in the Federal Register. This document provided the amount of each Schedule I and II drug that could be produced in the U.S, during 2015.

The Aggregate Production Quota for 2015 for marijuana was 125,000 grams.  In April of this year the DEA proposed a further increase to 400,000 grams....
